Step 1 – Platinum Notes: Choose your settingsĬlick to enlargeStep 1 will only need to be performed once after you install the software and unless you change your mind on output folder or file format you will not need to do this again. The software is very easy to use so you don’t need a degree to figure it out. After you run your tracks through the program it will not overwrite or delete your original file, it will write to a specified folder and ad “PN” to the end of the file name so you know it has been processed. All of your tracks will sound fantastic and all of them will be at the same volume level for perfect mixing. This means that when you play you will no longer need to use the gain, or rely on the auto gain feature of Traktor. It will either increase or decrease the volume of your track to normal levels that sound full and are not clipping. Platinum Notes is used to improve your music files before you play them out. Platinum Notes is optional but does make a difference in my opinion, if you buy both together at the same time you will get a better price. There are two pieces of very simple to use software, created by DJ’s, that I personally use. All their other products are somewhere between unimpressive and harmful.Since we are now well into the digital era it would be prudent for you to use the available tech to your advantage. The first step for any DJ is to prepare their files properly. MiK is the top dog, a real stellar program that imho everyone should have. If you have tracks that are really poorly mastered and could benefit from remastering, you can probably get better results with Maximus or Ozone, or even just some EQ and a mild amount of compression. SDJ (probably everything else has this too) has an automagical gain adjustment that gets set at the time a track is analyzed, so you usually don't need to do much gain adjustment these days. You're absolutely right just use the gain knobs.
There is no reason for anyone to use Platinum Notes. In fact, that's probably what is happening shoving everything through a limiter will indeed make everything the same volume. The files all showed up as corrupt in Scratch Live, and sounded like they were crammed at 8+ dB through a limiter. I had them send me a demo of what Platinum Notes would do for a few of my tracks, and the results were outrageously bad. Imagine running everything through Sausage Fattener, and you get the idea of what horrors have been visited upon your tunes.
It basically applies an unnecessary "one-size-fits-none" mastering chain to your tracks.
